Michael Unger is proud to have been associated with NewArts from its inception, having directed Seussical: the Musical, A ROCKIN’ Midsummer Night’s Dream, The 101 Dalmatians Musical, The Lion King, Jr., Liberty Smith, Wizard of Oz, School of Rock, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Newsies, and A Christmas Carol. He first became associated with the Newtown community when he directed From Broadway with Love, A Benefit Concert for Sandy Hook (CD and DVD available). Michael is also the Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education for Off-Broadway’s York Theatre Company where he has directed Knickerbocker Holiday, Big: The Musical, Milk and Honey, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, and dozens of developmental readings. Other selected directing credits include A Christmas Carol (McCarter Theatre 1998–2015); Two Point Oh (59E59 – New York Times Critics’ Pick); Time Stands Still (Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre – Cape Cod Chronicle Best of 2015); and over a dozen operas; two of which are available on DVD. Other directing credits include: My Sister in This House (Deaf West – Ovation Recommended); Grease (Paramount Theatre); Crimes of the Heart (Theatre Aspen) and new versions of The Happy Time (Signature Theatre, DC) and The Rink (Cape Playhouse). World premieres include Caligula (NYMF – Winner: Best of the Fest), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Barrington Stage), and A ROCKIN’ Midsummer Night’s Dream (for NewArts) which was featured in the award-winning documentary, Midsummer in Newtown. That production was also presented at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. He recently co-directed From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert for Parkland, USA in Florida.
